Blog Assigment 4 Topic 3

One company I think is just horrible is AXE. This company persistantly tries to persuade people to buy their product using the ability to get more women to attract more attention from males. Other products in the same field such as BOD body spray do the same thing but they dont go so over board with it. In the AXE commercials of today, they highly over exaggerate this showing scenes where a guy sprays himself with the AXE spray and women came sticking to him like he was a magnet. Even though other commercials over exaggerate just as bad if not worse than the AXE company, I feel like their commercials and products are not aimed at one particular group of people. Old Spice, a competitor of AXE, has done a fantastic job of using this to their advantage and that is where they excel past the AXE company by a huge mark. Old Spice has become a sponsor of the NFL which is probably the biggest step they have made over the AXE company. Everyone in America knows the sport of football and almost every American citizen has seen some form of football being played, and most have seen at least one NFL football game in their lifetime. If it were up to me, I would have my company, in his case the AXE company, become a sponsor of the NBA which is the next big American sport under football. This way I would have a wide variety of people from men to boys, girls and women who know indirectly about my product through the watching of their favorite sport. Though I think AXE goes too far with their commercials and should change them immediately, they seem to work for the most part, therefore I would not change them. The one thing that would greatly help this company’s success as I explained before is definitely becoming sponsored by the NBA that way everyone knows about AXE and it would not only be for men, but for boys and I would also create a line for women.

Blog Assignment 3

My choice of a social media to go a day without was my phone. After not feeling much of an impact of it, I decided to go a second day without it. The first day I went without it was mainly because I was putting my grades first because I wasn’t doing so well in two of my four classes. I had two D’s and I wasn’t going to settle for getting by with the bare minimum. I usually listen to music and text my girlfriend all day, even when I should be doing homework, and my grades showed the negative effects. On that first day I was mainly focused on doing homework in my accounting class and it took me a total of 5 hours to catch up on my work. I made a D on the first test and on the same day I caught up on homework, I had a test in the class and left out feeling like I made at least a B which encouraged me to go another day without my phone.
On that second day, the effects of not having my phone began to sink in and I was miserable. Having done all of my homework the previous day and no class that day, I was planning to workout all day but the weight room was closed. I then went to the locker room to retrieve my stick and play wall ball but the ball bag was in coach’s office and I learned that he was in a meeting and could not come and open it for me. I then realized that my plans for the day had been shot down and all of my teammates had class that day so I was all alone with nothing to do.
That day made me realize just how dependant I had become in my cell phone and it amazed me. I contemplated heavily on picking up my phone and texting my brains out, but after being so successful the day before I decided to do without it. After going through this, I learned that social media in certain forms is extremely influential on the world today. Cell phones have many advantages and disadvantages, but the two outweigh each other in my opinion. Cell phones are portable, readily available and with the new technological advancements, smartphones like the iPhone I have are considered mini laptops because of their web surfing capabilities. Even though cell phones have many advantages and allow students to do homework on them, there are disadvantages as well. Many beloved that the radiation from overuse of cell phones could be potentially harmful to one’s health. Also they are life consuming and costly and I can vouch for this because of the negative effects of putting a phone before my education and having paid my cell phone bill for the firs two months. Another big disadvantage that cell phones have is their history of causing texting and driving accidents which have taken many lives. Through all of their negativity, cell phones have become a big part of popular culture today and will continue to change to keep up with the changing world of today.

Movies have come a long way to become what they are today. We have to be thankful to the many who put in the effort to give us what we can enjoy in the movie theaters today. Early movie formats were nowhere near as good as they are now, but they have came to be what they are through long and tedious processes of trial and error.

From early photography and its development, many scientists and engineers came up with the idea of capturing motion pictures. These ideas later led to the development of nickelodeons through the creation of devices used to play a series of pictures at a fast speed in order to make it look like the picture is actually moving. Thomas Edison played a vital part in the projection of the images taken by a camera onto a screen. His idea consisted of passing light through the images to make theme appear onto a bigger screen. “The Kinetoscope is an early motion picture exhibition device. The Kinetoscope was designed for films to be viewed by one individual at a time through a peepholeviewer window at the top of the device. The Kinetoscope was not a movie projectorbut introduced the basic approach that would become the standard for all cinematic projection before the advent of video, by creating the illusion of movement by conveying a strip of perforated film bearing sequential images over a light source with a high-speed shutter.”<; The Kinetoscope was an interesting invention, but it was primarily the idea of Thomas Edison as explained above. This and many other early inventions put together with the improvements made by modern scientists made movies a hit.

“The latter was a cabinet in which a continuous loop of Dickson’s celluloid film (powered by anelectric motor) was back lit by an incandescent lamp and seen through a magnifying lens.” <> As explained above, the more modern scientists added to Thomas Edison’s ideas making early movies a hit. As technology became better, the prices of movie tickets was cheaper, making them more affordable, thus bringing in larger crowds. “In the early days of silent movies the names of the actors and actresses appearing in movies were not publicized or credited because producers feared this would result in demands for higher salaries.[2] However, audience curiosity soon undermined this policy. By 1909, actresses such as Florence Lawrence and Mary Pickford were already widely recognized.” <; The above quote lets you know that as silent films progressed into full color motion picture with sound, many stars that were not noticed before became famous and known by their voice and physical features which were all displayed better as movies progressed. In conclusion, movies evolved into what they are today mainly because of the growth in technology which made them more of a thrill for people to see.

The books of today go through a far more advanced editing procedure than in the past in the first step of the prices, the author creates the original story in itself and he/she sends it to an agent. That agent then scrambles through and picks through certain ideas in the store. the agent would then contact publishing houses and particular editors who would be interested in continuing the manuscript through the process of becoming an actual book. If all is well and the book is continued through the process, the agent represents the author in negotiating a contract with the particular editor or publishing house. With the material in hand, an editor does many things to make the work of the author into a book. They first evaluate the story and generate ideas, and also look at their sales potential. After the editor looks at it, the manuscript goes through a production staff who adds images and edits the format of the book to make it look more attractive to the public eye. Then it finally goes through a sales staff who markets the book by persuading individual booksellers and schools to carry the book.

One more step many people forget about is the censorship stage. Censorship in the media of today can be beneficial in many ways, but at the same time, it can be just as bad. one can only be hidden away from the reality of the world as it is today for so long until they start to realize what really goes on. When they realize this, that person may not know how to handle situations on their own and may find themselves lost in the world. In other words, i speak out against the overprotective parents in the world who constantly hide their children from what goes on in the real world. This can be potentially dangerous because they might not know how to cope with everyday life and be dependent on their parents who may not be able to aid them as they used to. Censorship has its values, but should not be so powerful as to ban particular books from the public.
